Summary:

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Zeal Polytechnic, Narhe marked a significant milestone on the occasion of National Safety Month 2025 by formally inaugurating the Road Safety Club in collaboration with the Institute of Driving Training & Research Society (IDTR), Pune. The initiative is aimed at promoting road safety awareness, fostering innovative solutions for safer mobility, and encouraging responsible road usage among students and the broader community.

Mr.Sanjay Sasane Sir delivered an insightful keynote address, emphasizing the critical role of awareness and training in road safety. He highlighted that “investment in training is a vaccination against traffic crashes” and underscored the importance of road transport in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The importance of road transport as a backbone of economic growth and its link to sustainability.

The legal requirements and approval process for new vehicles, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental standards. The current scenario of road accidents in India, stressing the urgent need for effective measures to reduce fatalities. The Safe System Approach, inspired by the “Vision Zero” initiatives of developed countries, aiming for zero road traffic fatalities through better infrastructure, vehicle safety, and behavior change.

Efforts to Reduce Road Accidents:

Sir elaborated on government initiatives and policies aimed at reducing road accidents, including stricter enforcement of traffic laws, awareness campaigns, and enhanced vehicle safety standards.
He praised the efforts of NGOs and other organizations in promoting the Good Samaritan Law, which protects and encourages bystanders to assist accident victims. He also highlighted the importance of life skills training for youth to build responsible and safety-conscious drivers.

Objective/Purpose:

The Road Safety Club was formed with the following objectives:

  1. To raise awareness about road safety measures and practices among students.
  2. To encourage responsible driving behavior and adherence to traffic rules.
  3. To conduct training programs, workshops, and campaigns on road safety.
  4. To promote the use of sustainable and safe transportation methods.
